This Telepresence Precision Robotic Telemanipulator with an adjustable size/scale relationship lets you manipulate objects which are too small for human hands and to adjust the movement relationship between the controls and robot arms.
The exhibit is also available as a two sided version to allow two visitors to use the exhibit at the same time with separate sets of controls and arms.
The exhibit provides hands on activities based on Telepresence Robotic Manipulation technology which encompasses devices for transmitting hand, finger and arm movements to a remote robotic device, allowing the manipulation of objects that are too heavy, dangerous, small, or in other respects too difficult to handle directly.
Manipulators help to extend human capabilities. The extension of capabilities can be the ability to reduce invasive procedures, the ability to work with higher precision and for certain applications to be able to work with hazardous materials as in the case of manipulators used for nuclear materials, radioactive isotopes, industrial toxins or bio-hazards and other pathogens. The use of manipulators can also apply to certain aspects of clean room lab applications which benefit a wide range of technological innovation and production. Manipulators have classically been made to operate via direct mechanical linkage or by telepresence.
This exhibit illustrates the more technologically advanced aspects of telepresence as the basis of how the exhibit operates, but the educational range of material also conveys the aspects of the mechanical linkage systems as well.
As with all of our robotics exhibits this exhibit also conveys a wide variety of elements that are important to STEM education. One key aspect of this is the fact that all of the main electrical, mechanical and electromechanical elements are visible while they operate and documented in the associated educational materials and graphics.
